Today we are following one tiny water drop on a big adventure: from the ocean, up into the sky, inside a cloud, down as rain, and back to Earth again.
Have you ever watched rain fall from the sky and wondered where it came from?
It might seem like rain simply appears from clouds, but every raindrop has a story. Before it fell onto your umbrella, that drop may have been part of the ocean. It may have floated in the air as invisible water vapor. It may have joined a cloud, fallen into a river, soaked into the ground, or helped a plant grow.
This journey is called the water cycle.
The water cycle is the way water moves around Earth again and again. Water does not stay in one place forever. It travels between oceans, lakes, rivers, clouds, rain, snow, soil, plants, and the air.
And the amazing part?
The water cycle has no true beginning or ending. It keeps going.
Before You Begin: Where Does Rain Come From?

1. What Is the Water Cycle?
The water cycle is the continuous movement of water around Earth.
Water moves through the sky, across the land, into the ground, through plants, into rivers, and back to the ocean. It can change between different forms:
- Liquid water, like oceans, rivers, lakes, rain, and puddles.
- Water vapor, which is invisible water in the air.
- Ice, like snow, glaciers, hail, and frozen lakes.
The U.S. Geological Survey explains that Earth’s water cycle includes many processes, including evaporation, condensation, precipitation, runoff, streamflow, infiltration, and groundwater movement.1
For kids, the easiest way to remember the water cycle is with four main steps:
- Evaporation: water rises into the air as vapor.
- Condensation: water vapor cools and forms clouds.
- Precipitation: water falls from clouds as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
- Collection: water gathers in oceans, rivers, lakes, soil, and underground.
Then the journey starts again.
2. Step One: The Ocean Gets Warm
Our water-cycle story often begins in the ocean.
Oceans cover most of Earth’s surface, so they are a huge source of water for the water cycle. When sunlight warms the ocean, some liquid water near the surface gets enough energy to change into water vapor.
Water vapor is still water, but it is in gas form. It is invisible, so you usually cannot see it.
This process is called evaporation.
NASA explains that heat from the Sun causes water to evaporate from oceans, lakes, and streams, turning liquid water into water vapor in the atmosphere.2
Evaporation can happen from:
- oceans
- lakes
- rivers
- ponds
- puddles
- wet streets
- wet clothes drying outside
If you have ever seen a puddle disappear after the Sun comes out, you have seen evaporation in action.
Fun fact!
Evaporation does not mean water disappears forever. It means water changes form and becomes invisible water vapor in the air.
3. Step Two: Water Vapor Rises
After water evaporates, it rises into the air as water vapor.
Warm air can carry water vapor upward. As the vapor rises higher into the sky, the air around it usually becomes cooler.
That cooling is important because it helps water vapor change form again.
The water is about to become part of a cloud.
4. Plants Join the Journey Too
Water does not only rise from oceans, lakes, and puddles.
Plants also send water vapor into the air.
Plants take in water through their roots. Some of that water travels up through the plant and exits through tiny openings in the leaves. This process is called transpiration.
NASA explains that water from plants and trees also evaporates into the atmosphere through transpiration.2
So the water cycle is not only about oceans and clouds. Forests, grass, flowers, and trees are part of it too.

5. Step Three: Condensation Makes Clouds
When water vapor rises and cools, it can turn back into tiny liquid water droplets.
This is called condensation.
Condensation is how clouds form.
The U.S. Geological Survey explains that condensation is the process by which water vapor in the air changes into liquid water, and that condensation is important in cloud formation.3
You can see condensation at home. If you have a cold glass of water on a warm day, tiny droplets may appear on the outside of the glass. The glass cools the air around it, and water vapor changes into liquid droplets.
Clouds form in a similar way, but high in the sky.
Mini Experiment: Condensation on a Cold Glass
Ask an adult before trying this.
You need:
- a clear glass
- cold water
- ice cubes
Steps:
- Fill the glass with cold water and ice.
- Wait a few minutes.
- Look at the outside of the glass.
- Do you see tiny water drops?
Those drops did not come through the glass. They came from water vapor in the air. When the vapor touched the cold glass, it cooled and became liquid water.
That is condensation.

Condensation is water vapor turning back into tiny liquid droplets.
6. Step Four: Clouds Get Heavy
Clouds may look soft and light, but they are full of tiny water droplets or ice crystals.
Inside a cloud, droplets can bump into each other and join together. When this happens many times, the droplets grow larger.
At first, the droplets are tiny enough to float in the air. But as they grow bigger, they become heavier.
Eventually, some droplets become too heavy to stay in the cloud.
Then gravity pulls them down.
That is when rain begins.
The Met Office explains that tiny cloud droplets collide and combine into larger droplets, and when they become heavy enough, they fall as rain.4
7. Step Five: Precipitation Falls
Precipitation means water falling from the sky.
Rain is one kind of precipitation, but there are others too.
Precipitation can be:
- rain
- snow
- sleet
- hail
- freezing rain
What falls depends on the temperature in the cloud and the air below the cloud.
If the air is warm, water usually falls as rain. If the air is very cold, it may fall as snow. If drops freeze or pass through cold air, they may become sleet or hail.
NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement program explains that water evaporates from Earth’s surface, rises into the atmosphere, cools and condenses into rain or snow in clouds, and then falls again as precipitation.5

8. Step Six: Rain Lands on Earth
When rain reaches the ground, many things can happen.
Some rain falls into oceans, lakes, rivers, and ponds.
Some rain lands on soil and soaks into the ground.
Some rain flows across streets, hills, and fields as runoff.
Some rain is taken up by plants.
Some rain becomes puddles, which may later evaporate again.
The journey is not over when rain hits the ground. It simply enters the next part of the water cycle.
9. Runoff: Water on the Move
Runoff is water that flows over land.
After a rainstorm, water may run down sidewalks, streets, hills, playgrounds, and fields. Some of it flows into drains, streams, rivers, lakes, and eventually the ocean.
Runoff is important because it helps move water across Earth’s surface.
But too much runoff can also cause flooding, especially if the ground cannot absorb the water quickly enough or if drains become blocked.
This is why heavy rain can sometimes be dangerous.
Water is helpful, but fast-moving water can be powerful.
Safety reminder
Never play near fast-moving water, flooded streets, storm drains, or overflowing streams. Rainwater can move faster than it looks.
10. Infiltration: Water Soaks Into the Ground
Some rain does not run across the land. Instead, it soaks into the ground.
This is called infiltration.
When water soaks into soil, it can help plants grow. Some water moves deeper underground and becomes groundwater.
Groundwater is water stored beneath Earth’s surface in spaces between soil, sand, gravel, and rock.
Some groundwater later flows into springs, streams, rivers, or wells.
That means rain can help fill hidden water supplies underground.
11. Collection: Water Gathers Again
Collection is when water gathers in places like:
- oceans
- lakes
- rivers
- ponds
- wetlands
- soil
- underground spaces
Once water collects, the Sun can warm it again.
Then evaporation can happen again.
The cycle continues.
A drop of water may travel through the water cycle many, many times.

Without the water cycle, Earth would be a very different place.
There would be no regular rain, fewer rivers, dry plants, thirsty animals, and much less life.
The water cycle helps keep Earth alive.
14. How Rain Helps People
Rain may sometimes feel annoying when it cancels outdoor plans or makes your shoes wet, but rain is very useful.
Rain helps people by:
- watering crops
- filling reservoirs
- supporting forests
- cooling hot places
- cleaning dust from the air
- giving water to rivers and lakes
Rain is one reason farms can grow food.
It is also one reason cities need drains, roads, umbrellas, raincoats, and weather forecasts.
Rain is both helpful and something we need to prepare for.

15. Why Umbrellas Are Part of the Rain Story
The water cycle explains why rain falls.
Umbrellas explain how people stay dry when it does.
An umbrella is like a portable roof. Its canopy blocks falling rain, and its curved shape helps water roll off the sides.
Umbrellas are helpful because rain is part of life on Earth. We cannot stop the water cycle, but we can prepare for it.

This activity helps kids see the water cycle in a simple way.

You need:
- a clear zip bag
- a little water
- blue food coloring if available
- tape
- a sunny window
- a marker
Steps:
- Draw a sun, clouds, ocean, and raindrops on the outside of the bag.
- Add a small amount of water to the bag.
- Add one drop of blue food coloring if you want.
- Seal the bag tightly.
- Tape it to a sunny window.
- Watch what happens over time.
The Sun warms the water. Some water evaporates inside the bag. Water vapor collects on the sides and top of the bag. Then droplets form and slide down like rain.
