Today we are going to follow a tiny drop of water as it travels from the ocean, into the sky, inside a cloud, down as rain, into a puddle, and back again.
Rain can feel ordinary because we see it all the time. It falls on sidewalks, taps on windows, fills puddles, waters plants, makes rivers flow, and gives us a reason to open an umbrella.
But rain is actually part of one of Earth’s most important natural systems: the water cycle.
The water cycle is the journey water takes as it moves around Earth. Water can be in oceans, lakes, rivers, clouds, rain, snow, ice, soil, plants, and even the air around us. It can change form from liquid water to invisible water vapor, then back into liquid droplets again.
That means the rain falling outside your window may have once been ocean water, lake water, river water, or even water that evaporated from a leaf.

1. What Is Rain?
Rain is liquid water falling from clouds.
Clouds are made of tiny water droplets or ice crystals floating in the sky. These droplets are so small and light that they can stay up in the air for a while. But when droplets bump into each other and join together, they grow bigger and heavier.
Eventually, some drops become too heavy to stay in the cloud.
Then they fall.
That falling water is rain.
The Met Office explains that clouds form when water vapor cools and condenses into tiny water droplets. These droplets can grow larger by joining with other droplets, and when they become too heavy to stay in the cloud, we get rain.1
2. The Water Cycle: Rain’s Big Adventure
Rain is part of the water cycle.
The water cycle is the way water moves around Earth again and again. Water can travel from the ocean to the sky, from the sky to the ground, from the ground into rivers, and from rivers back to the ocean.
The U.S. Geological Survey explains that water moves between the atmosphere and Earth’s surface through processes such as evaporation, precipitation, runoff, streamflow, infiltration, and groundwater recharge.2
For kids, the water cycle can be remembered with four big steps:
- Evaporation: water warms up and becomes invisible water vapor.
- Condensation: water vapor cools and becomes tiny cloud droplets.
- Precipitation: water falls from clouds as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
- Collection: water gathers in rivers, lakes, oceans, soil, and underground.
Then it happens again.
And again.
And again.
Big idea
The water cycle has no real beginning or ending. Water keeps moving around Earth in a giant loop.
3. Step One: Evaporation
Evaporation happens when liquid water turns into water vapor.
Water vapor is water in gas form. You usually cannot see it.
The Sun gives energy to oceans, lakes, rivers, puddles, and wet ground. When water gets enough energy, some of it changes into vapor and rises into the air.
NASA explains that heat from sunlight causes water to evaporate from oceans, lakes, and streams, turning liquid water into water vapor in the atmosphere.3
Evaporation can happen from:
- oceans
- lakes
- rivers
- puddles
- wet streets
- wet clothes
- soil
Have you ever seen a puddle disappear after the Sun comes out?
That is evaporation.
Try this!
After a rainy day, look for a small puddle. Check it later when the weather is sunny. Did it get smaller? Some of the water evaporated into the air.
4. Plants Help Too: Transpiration
Water does not only evaporate from oceans and puddles.
Plants also release water vapor into the air through a process called transpiration.
Plants take in water through their roots. Some of that water travels up through the plant and leaves through tiny openings in the leaves. This water becomes water vapor in the air.
NASA notes that water from plants and trees also evaporates into the atmosphere, and this process is called transpiration.3
So trees, grass, and plants are part of the water cycle too.
That means a rainforest does not just receive rain. It also helps send water back into the air.
5. Step Two: Condensation
Condensation happens when water vapor cools and turns back into liquid water droplets.
This is how clouds form.
The air high in the sky is often cooler than the air near the ground. When water vapor rises and cools, it can turn into tiny liquid droplets. These tiny droplets gather together and become clouds.
The U.S. Geological Survey explains that condensation is the process by which water vapor in the air changes into liquid water, and it is important because it helps form clouds.4
You can see condensation at home too.
Have you ever noticed water droplets on the outside of a cold glass? The glass cools the air around it, and water vapor turns into tiny drops.
That is condensation.
Mini experiment
Ask an adult for a glass with ice water. Wait a few minutes. Tiny water drops may appear on the outside of the glass. That is condensation — the same idea that helps clouds form.
6. Step Three: Clouds Grow
Clouds are not fluffy cotton floating in the sky.
They are made of tiny water droplets or ice crystals.
Inside a cloud, tiny droplets move around. They can bump into each other, stick together, and grow larger. When enough droplets join together, they become heavy.
Clouds may look light and soft, but they can hold an amazing amount of water.
Eventually, gravity pulls the heavier droplets downward.
That is when precipitation begins.

7. Step Four: Precipitation
Precipitation is water falling from the sky.
Rain is one kind of precipitation, but it is not the only kind.
Precipitation can be:
- rain
- snow
- sleet
- hail
- freezing rain
Which one happens depends on the temperature in the cloud and the air below it.
If the air is warm enough, falling water stays liquid and reaches the ground as rain. If the air is cold, it may become snow, sleet, or hail.
NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement education page explains that water evaporates from Earth’s surface, rises into the atmosphere, cools and condenses into rain or snow in clouds, then falls again as precipitation.5
8. Why Are Some Raindrops Big and Some Small?
Not all rain feels the same.
Sometimes rain is a gentle drizzle. Sometimes it is a heavy downpour. Sometimes the drops feel tiny. Sometimes they splash loudly on the ground.
Raindrop size depends on how droplets grow inside clouds and what happens as they fall.
Droplets can grow by:
- joining with other droplets
- collecting more water as they move through the cloud
- falling through different layers of air
Very large drops can break apart as they fall because air pushes against them.
That means raindrops are not always perfect tear shapes like in cartoons. Real falling raindrops can become round, flattened, or even break into smaller drops.

Real raindrops are not shaped like cartoon teardrops. Small drops are close to round, and bigger drops can flatten as they fall.
9. Why Does Rain Sometimes Fall Hard?
Heavy rain happens when clouds contain lots of water and the droplets grow quickly.
Warm air can hold more water vapor than cold air. In warm, humid places, there may be lots of moisture available to make clouds and rain.
Strong rising air can also help build tall storm clouds. These clouds can produce heavy rain, thunder, lightning, and sometimes hail.
That is why summer storms can sometimes feel sudden and powerful.

10. Why Does Rain Sometimes Smell Good?
Many people love the smell after rain.
That fresh rainy smell is sometimes called petrichor.
Petrichor can happen when rain hits dry soil, rocks, plants, and streets. Tiny particles and natural oils can be released into the air, creating that “after rain” smell.
Kids might describe it as:
- earthy
- fresh
- green
- muddy
- clean
The smell of rain is one reason rainy days can feel cozy, peaceful, or exciting.

11. Why Do We Need Rain?
Rain is not only something that makes us carry umbrellas.
Rain is important for life on Earth.
Rain helps:
- water plants
- fill rivers and lakes
- support farms and crops
- provide water for animals
- recharge groundwater
- move water through the water cycle
- cool the air on hot days
Without rain, many plants could not grow, rivers would shrink, and animals would struggle to find water.
Rain can be annoying when it ruins a picnic, but it is also one of the reasons Earth is alive and green.
12. Why Do We Need Umbrellas?
Rain is good for Earth, but people still need protection from it.
An umbrella helps keep rain away from your head, face, backpack, clothes, and books.
Umbrellas work by creating a small portable roof. The canopy blocks falling rain, and the curved shape helps water roll off the sides.
Different umbrellas solve different problems:
- compact umbrellas are easy to carry
- large umbrellas give more coverage
- reverse-fold umbrellas help keep the wet side tucked inward
- UV umbrellas help protect from sunlight
- reflective umbrellas can help with visibility at night

13. Rain Safety for Kids
Rain can be fun, but it is important to stay safe.
Remember these rainy-day safety tips:
- Walk carefully because wet floors and sidewalks can be slippery.
- Do not jump into puddles near roads because cars can splash water.
- Use crosswalks and look carefully because rain can make it harder for drivers to see.
- Never stand under a tree during lightning.
- Do not play near flooded drains, streams, or fast-moving water.
- Hold your umbrella carefully so it does not poke anyone.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing if it is dark and rainy.

15. Mini Experiment: Make a Rain Cloud in a Jar
This simple activity helps show how clouds become rain.
Ask an adult before doing this experiment.
You need:
- a clear jar or glass
- water
- shaving cream
- blue food coloring
- a spoon or dropper
Steps:
- Fill the jar with water.
- Add shaving cream on top. This is your cloud.
- Drop blue food coloring onto the shaving cream.
- Watch carefully.
- When the “cloud” gets too full, blue drops fall into the water like rain.
This is not exactly how real clouds work, but it helps show the idea: when a cloud gathers enough water, drops can fall.

18. The Short Answer: How Does Rain Work?
Rain happens because water is always moving around Earth.
The Sun warms water and turns some of it into invisible water vapor. This vapor rises into the air. When it cools, it changes back into tiny water droplets that form clouds. Inside the clouds, droplets join together and grow. When they become too heavy, they fall as rain.
Then the rain flows into puddles, rivers, lakes, soil, plants, and oceans.
Later, some of that water evaporates again.
That is the water cycle.

Rain is not just water falling from the sky.
